A Call for Evolution

The tragic story of Brian Thompson and the disturbing reactions it sparked highlight the need for shadow work. Shadow work uncovers the unconscious values and biases driving our actions and helps us align with a vision of equity and sustainability. To change broken systems, we must first evolve within ourselves, choosing mindfulness, compassion, and personal transformation over violence and blame.

Shadow Violence, Healthcare, and a Call for Change

A Disturbing Reaction to Tragedy

Hello friends,

This week, I’ve been deeply troubled by the tragic and disturbing story of Brian Thompson, a healthcare executive in New York who was gruesomely murdered. What's even more alarming is the reaction it sparked on social media. Louigi Mangione, accused of this heinous crime, is being celebrated by some as a folk hero—a symbol of anger directed at a healthcare system that many feel has failed them.

Understanding Shadow Violence

While I understand the frustration with our broken system, celebrating violence only perpetuates the very shadows we claim to oppose. 'Shadow violence' refers to the internal impulse to violence that lives in all of us. And it is at play in every facet of this tragedy: unrestrained anger drove Mangione to commit this unspeakable act, and collective shadow violence fuels those who cheer him on. Neither resolves the underlying problem. Violence never leads to lasting solutions—it only deepens wounds.

Systems Reflect Values

The truth is, we have the healthcare system we voted for. And I'm not speaking of the last election, but over decades of choices. Our societal systems reflect our collective values. And what shapes values? Perspective. And what shifts perspective? Evolution.

Evolution Begins Within

We must evolve for a real and lasting change in healthcare—or in tackling the climate crisis, ecological degradation, political divisions, economic inequality, or you name the issue. That evolution begins within!

Shadow Work: The Path Forward

Shadow work, the challenging yet essential practice of self-reflection, is needed most now. Indeed, shadow work is the only thing that will uncover the unconscious beliefs, fears, and biases that drive our actions, individually and collectively. Shadow work asks: What values am I voting for—not just in the ballot box, but in my daily life? How am I contributing to the systems I criticize? Where am I failing to align my actions with the world I want to see?

Transformation Starts Within

If we want a better healthcare system, a healthier planet, and a more just society, it starts within us. We must strive to become better versions of ourselves—more mindful, compassionate, and aligned with values that promote equity and sustainability. Violence is never the answer, but personal transformation is.

An Invitation to Transform

Let’s make this the moment we choose growth over blame, reflection over reaction. I invite you to share this message with anyone ready to join a movement of self-awareness and evolution. And if you’re ready to dive into this work, let’s connect (mark@skillfullyaware.com). Through coaching, retreats, and community, we can create the change we wish to see.

Wishing you courage, clarity, and connection,

Mark.
