Plug Your Power Leaks

We all have moments where we feel off-center, reactive, or drained—but these patterns often signal deeper issues beneath the surface. In this post, Dr. Mark Pirtle introduces the SkillfullyAware framework: seven Power Centers and six Core Aptitudes that help pinpoint where you’re leaking personal power. Learn how to spot these patterns, work with them skillfully, and lead from a place of greater presence, resilience, and alignment.

Hey friends,

Lately, I’ve been noticing a pattern—not just in my clients, but in myself. Whenever I feel stuck, reactive, or off-center, it’s rarely about what’s happening on the surface.

It’s usually something deeper that I’m stressed about. And when that stress overwhelms me, I don’t always show up as my best self. Can you relate?

We all show up in different ways depending on the context. Some versions of us are more powerful than others. Lately, I’ve been reflecting on when and how I leak power. That thinking led me to create a system for identifying where it happens.

Let me explain by first defining the seven Power Centers—the core domains where we express (or lose) power:

  • Physical – strength, stamina, and presence
  • Creative – expressive flow and innovation
  • Emotional – depth, resilience, and stability
  • Financial – sovereignty, responsibility, and integrity
  • Social – relational influence and authenticity
  • Intellectual – mental clarity and perspective
  • Spiritual – connection, meaning, purpose, and alignment

When even one of these centers is off, we begin leaking power across the board.

To restore ourselves, we build capacity in six Core Aptitudes:

  • Influence — grounded presence and communication
  • Drive — intrinsic motivation
  • Perseverance — grit to stay with challenges
  • Achievement —focused execution, concluding things
  • Alignment — values-based decision-making
  • Restraint — the wisdom to pause, wait, or release

Each aptitude has a repeating shadow pattern. When those shadows go unexamined, they can silently drain our capacity to lead, relate, and live well.

Through my SkillfullyAware method—Meditation & Mindfulness, Perspective-Taking, and Shadow Work—we uncover those shadow patterns, close the leaks, and restore power where it's needed.

Fragmented or whole?

Are you living from centered wholeness or from a place that feels fragmented? If the latter, where might you be leaking power? Which aptitude could use a tune-up?
