A Client Story
Hello all!
I recently wrapped up a retreat with a brilliant client who's faced a long battle with addiction. His journey started in his teens, drawn to drugs simply because "it felt good." Despite a typical middle-class upbringing, a mix of unsupervised freedom and thrill-seeking led him down a dark path. By his twenties, he was shooting heroin.
A Thrilling 20-Year Run
Fast-forward fifteen years, he got clean and channeled his sharp mind into investigative journalism, sometimes working behind the scenes to expose organized crime networks. It was a thrilling 20-year run, but as the industry shifted and technology advanced, his skills became outdated, and he found himself lost, jobless, and itching to fill a void. The lure of an easy, quick fix became too intense to fight.
There are Always Consequences
He was a functional user. But that doesn't mean there weren't consequences. Eventually, shame led him to isolate himself from his wife and friends. During our retreat, we explored how shame can amplify our pain, trap us in our heads, and lead us down a path of hopelessness—a feeling many can relate to, whether you've faced addiction or not.
